Your Visit to the Low Vision Center
The Low Vision Center evaluates patients with visual system disorders and impairments
as referred by their doctor. The center does not diagnose or treat visual disorders
but provides instruction and tools in a comprehensive environment to help patients
regain and prolong independence.
Prior to your visit, an information packet will be mailed to you, detailing the
low vision evaluation process. Your first visit takes about two hours and may include
rehabilitation efforts through a vision rehabilitation teacher and a vision rehabilitation
trainer. The Low Vision Center works in conjunction with other agencies to provide
rehabilitation support.
Based on evaluation results, our team develops an individualized plan of treatment.
A detailed plan includes:
- Patient education to modify day-to-day activities
- Patient training and practice on the use of residual vision
- Dispensing appropriate optical, non-optical, or other assistive devices
- Instructing the patient on working with the prescribed device
- Teaching the patient in practicing skills for independent living, such as reading
and writing
- Addressing the patient's need for referrals for additional services
- Supplying information about government services and support groups
